Rokuden Shrine was constructed in 1178. Every year on October 9th, a great festival is held at the shrine where visitors can enjoy traditional Shinto Kagura music and dance and watch horseback archery demonstrations. The style of Kagura performed at Rokuden Shrine is called Kihara Kagura, and its origins and history are unknown. There is now a special organization working hard to preserve the traditions of Kihara Kagura. Rokuden Shrine's Sakura Gate has also been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It is representative of Muromachi period architecture, with a thatched roof, lacquered pillars, and elaborate decorations. The large Otorii entranceway was constructed in 1986 to commemorate the Emperor's 60th year on the throne.
