Located in the lower part of Chokoen Garden, Sokeien Garden is where the villa of the Murai family, who ran the Domain Hospital Saishunkan, once stood. It is said that this garden was built here by Murai Chinju (who used the penname Kinzan), the son of the hospital’s Director Murai Kenboku. Sokeien Garden’s water is drawn from Chokoen Garden into a winding stream that leads down into a pond meant to resemble China's Dongting Lake. On the north side of the garden is a simple tea room with a west-facing window, which, when opened, gives a picturesque view of the entirety of Mt. Arao. Designated as a Historic Site along with Chokoen Garden, Sokeien Garden is said to have been visited by many famous writers and poets such as Rai San'yo.
