This is the former residence of Yokoi Shonan, who is known as a famous thinker from the Dawn of the Meiji Restoration.
Born in Uchitsuboi (now Tsuboi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City), Shonan moved to Nuyamazu in 1855 where he would open his private school, Shijiken, and train numerous pupils. Among them were the samurai Sakamoto Ryoma; Yuri Kimimasa, who drafted the Charter Oath; Motoda Nagazane, who was instrumental in drafting the Imperial Rescript on Education; and Kowashi Inoue, who helped draft the Meiji Constitution.
The Yokoi Shonan Memorial Hall was built next to Shijiken and contains displays about Shonan as well as materials related to Katsu Kaishu, Yoshida Shoin, and Saigo Takamori among others. Moreover, you can walk just 10 minutes northeast to see statues of Shonan and stone monuments dedicated to him in Shonan Park.
