As part of the ONE PIECE Kumamoto Revival Project, the Luffy statue was placed in the Promenade in front of Kumamoto Prefectural Office in November of 2018. Manga artist and ONE PIECE creator Eiichiro Oda is a native of Kumamoto City, and with the cooperation of ONE PIECE publisher Shueisha, this statue was created to support the revitalization of areas affected by the Kumamoto Earthquake in April of 2016.
In November of 2020, the Chopper statue was put in front of the Zoological and Botanical Gardens, and 4 other bronze statues were placed around Kumamoto Prefecture: Usopp in Aso City, Franky in Takamori Town, Sanji in Mashiki Town and Brook in Mifune Town. Three more staues are planned to be set up later in Otsu Town (Zoro), Nishihara Village (Nami) and Minami-Aso Village (Robin), for a total of 9 statues. The whole Straw Hat Pirate Gang stand in support of Kumamoto's revitalization.
