Soseki lived in 6 different houses during his 4 years and 3 month stay in Kumamoto. This former residence was originally located in Oemura (now Shin-yashiki 1-chome) but was dismantled and then rebuilt and restored here. His colleague and landlord from the Fifth High School, Ochiai Tokaku (a Chinese poet and chamberlain to Emperor Taisho), lent this house to Soseki while he was working in Tokyo. Soseki’s trip from this house to Oama in Tamana City became the subject of his novel “Kusamakura.” The building is currently open to the public.
