The Kamitori Shopping Arcade stretches northward from Kumamoto's main street, Densha-Dori. The covered arcade runs a length of 360 meters and spans 11 meters wide, and houses a wide variety of old and new shops. The high arched ceiling of the arcade was built in the style of Paris's Musée d'Orsay, with large skylights allowing in copious amounts of natural light and providing the arcade with a sense of spaciousness. The center of the arcade floor is lined with "ipe" wood, a beautiful hardwood originating in South America. Compared to the Shimotori Arcade on the other side of Densha-Dori, Kamitori is much more laid back and relaxed.
