Like Aso to the east, Mt. Kinpo bounds Kumamoto to the west and is visible from almost anywhere within the city limits. A number of historical landmarks are located around Mt. Kinpo, including the Touge-no-Chaya teahouse made famous in Natsume Soseki's novel "Kusamakura", as well as Reigando, the legendary cave where master swordsman Miyamoto Musashi penned his martial arts text "The Book of Five Rings". Mt. Kinpo is also a popular place for hikers and amateur mountaineers, as its plentiful hiking routes make for quality trekking. At the top of Mt. Kinpo is Kinpo Shrine, where there is a board recording those who have climbed Mt. Kinpo the most. The lookout spots at the top of Mt. Kinpo offer breathtaking views of downtown Kumamoto and Mt. Aso to the east, as well as the Ariake Sea and Mt. Unzen in Nagasaki Prefecture to the west.
