Located along the Tsuboi River next to Kumamoto Castle and between the Chibajo and Umaya Bridges lies Takahashi Park, home to a memorial for the heroes of the 19th century Meiji Restoration. A total of five bronze statues stand in the memorial, including revolutionary heroes Sakamoto Ryoma and Katsu Kaishu, as well as famed Kumamoto political thinker Yokoi Shonan. Yokoi Shonan was born in nearby Uchitsuboi, Kumamoto and was an important figure in the Meiji Restoration. This memorial is a good spot to take a quick rest, listen to the sounds of nearby river, and escape some of the downtown bustle.
