Located at the foot of Mt. Hanaoka, this site is where Myogeji Temple, the family temple of the Hosokawa clan who ruled as feudal lords of the domain, once stood and has been designated as a National Historic Site along with the site of Taishoji Temple in Tatsuda Natural Park.
Myogeji Temple was built to mourn the passing of Hosokawa Tadatoshi, the 3rd generation of the Hosokawa family and the 1st Hosokawa lord of the Kumamoto domain.
In the Showa era, the Hosokawa family gave this land to Kumamoto City to establish a public park. There is a stone staircase at the end of a row of stone lanterns surrounded by trees that leads up to three mausoleums enclosed by karamon gates and walls. These mausoleums are dedicated to Hosokawa Tadatoshi, his wife, and Hosokawa Mitsunao (Hosokawa clan’s 4th generation lord of the domain), and off to the side is the grave of Abe Yaichiemon of the Abe clan who followed his lord in death. In addition, the park also contains the grave of Hosokawa Tsunatoshi (5th generation) who took in Oishi Kuranosuke and 16 other members of the 47 legendary ronin known for attacking the Kira family residence as part of the Ako vendetta, as well as Yatsushiro Shigekata (8th generation), who was called the "Phoenix of Higo" for his role the Horeki calendar reform.
