Goto Zezan was born in 1886 in Kuju (present-day Takeda), Oita Prefecture. While working for the Kyushu Nichinichi Shimbun Newspaper, Zezan was dispatched to the Kokumin Newspaper in Tokyo where he worked under the direct guidance of Tokutomi Soho and was heavily influenced by Tokutomi Kenjiro and other writers of the time. After returning to Kumamoto, Zezan took on the role of editor and expanded the literary column by featuring haikus, poems, and illustrations by poets and painters he met in his time in Tokyo, creating a spectacular art space that captured readers' attention. The halls of the museum are decorated with many poems and haiku written by Yosano Tekkan and his wife Akiko as well as illustrated postcards from Katayama Nanpu.
