This former residence of Hosokawa Gyobu, younger brother of the feudal lord Hosokawa Tadatoshi, was moved from 1990, over the space of 4 years, to its current location near Kumamoto Castle. The mansion has a floor space of over 900 meters and features a wonderfully ornate Chinese-style main entrance. The residence as it stands is a wonderfully preserved example of a historical samurai residence. Also within the residence grounds is the Kiyutei teahouse, where visitors can experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.
