This bronze statue is of Kato Kiyomasa who is famed for building Kumamoto Castle, considered one of Japan's three premier castles. This is one of two statues of Kato Kiyomasa; the other is located at Honmyoji Temple. Seated in front of his fortress of Kumamoto Castle, dressed in kacchu battle armor and donning a large nagaeboshi helmet, Kato Kiyomasa looks ready to lead his men to battle and fight to protect his city of Kumamoto. Across from the statue is the Citizens Hall, where concerts and other performances are frequently held, and across from that is the International Center, which acts a central location for international exchange in Kumamoto.
