The season for Kumamoto suika (watermelon) runs from March through June. Located in the northern part of Kumamoto City, Ueki-machi is a town with such a large production volume that the famous Ueki no Suika brand is known throughout Japan. Compared to other large, round watermelons, the flesh of the Higo Manyu variety is crisp and firm, resulting in a higher degree of sweetness. The skin of the smaller, round Hitori Jime variety is thinner than larger round melons, making the flesh juicier and more succulent. These melons are characterised by their sweetness.
