Many master craftsmen once lived in Kawashiri, a town that prospered as a trading port during the Higo Domain of Kumamoto's history. Aiming to spread the word about Kumamoto's traditional craftsmanship, Kumamoto City Handicrafts Promotion Center plans performances and experiences that change daily, such as making "Higo-Temari", a decorated hand-ball, or painting a traditional toy, the wooden spinning top called "Higo Koma".
